Red Panda

Red Pandas

Are you ready to see some acrobatics? We are home to a red panda family that includes a pair and their offspring.

An elusive creature in mountain forests

Red pandas are known for their climbing ability which is made possible by their sharp and semi-retractable claws and flexible ankles that let them climb down headfirst. Their red coats and black bellies help them to blend in with their surroundings and safely sunbathe in trees away from predators. While they are omnivores, red pandas prefer to feast on bamboo and can eat up to four pounds a day.

Fun Facts about Red Pandas

Red pandas can release a pungent liquid from glands at the base of their tail to threaten a predator or attract a mate.

They can communicate through body language, including tail movements.

An extended wrist bone functions almost like a thumb and allows for gripping.

Red pandas are typically solitary apart from mothers rearing their cubs.

They are most active at dawn and dusk.

They will wrap their tails around themselves for warmth.
